The importance of date night

Cheap Date Night

Whether you’ve just started dating or you’ve been married awhile, I think date night is super important for any relationship. Even though Cody and I are married and spend most of our free time together, I still get excited for date night.

There’s a distinct difference between just spending time together and actually planning a date night. Even if the date is staying in because you’re saving money or it’s freezing outside, it’s still a special evening for just the two of you.

I also think the idea of planning a date night encourages you to really focus on each other. Just like the first couple of dates, there’s anticipation and excitement, which means you’ve been thinking about each other all day. It also means something different from the norm, putting in a little extra effort. And date night can help strengthen intimacy and communication.

Planning date night

Each couple is different, but part of the fun is in the actual planning of date night. I think it’s enjoyable to take turns planning, but it’s also fun to plan together. It’s really whatever works for you as a couple.

There are just a few things to consider when you are planning your night together. Is budget an issue? If yes, consider doing low-cost or free things together. Is the weather an issue? Seasonal dates are super fun depending on the weather. Do you need childcare? This is extremely important to consider and arrange beforehand. Are there time restraints? For instance, do you need to be back at a certain time or will you be traveling a distance?

These questions will help you figure what’s most convenient to you and your situation. By agreeing on any conditions ahead of time, you can avoid stress or tension for one or both of you.

If planning is difficult, I’ve seen some fun ideas to write down different dates at the beginning of the month or year and stick them in a jar. Some people use popsicle sticks, but small pieces of paper works, too. Once you fill the jar, all you have to do is pick out a pre-written date that day or the day before!

Cheap Date Night Ideas

Cody and I are a pretty frugal couple, so even though date night is important to us, we prefer not to spend a lot of money. We believe that spending time together is way more important than spending money. To each their own, but this list is for those who want to have fun with their special someone without breaking the bank.

 Cheap date night ideas

Wine and cheese night

Wine and cheese is a romantic combination. If you’re not too picky about your wines (like us), you can find a relatively inexpensive bottle to enjoy with some of your favorite cheeses. Other delicious accompaniments could include dark chocolate, fruit, olives, salami, crackers and pepper jelly.

Try different combinations and compare notes. It’s a fun conversation starter to learn what the other person likes and doesn’t like. And, of course, remember that info for next time!

Mock baking competition

We love dessert competition series on Netflix (Nailed It!, anyone?!) So, we’ve tried recreating some of these creations at home. You can either compete against each other and see whose  is better or work together against a faux competitor.

The point is to have fun in the kitchen! And maybe have some sweet treats when you’re done. If you’re a novice baker, start with something simple like cupcakes, sugar cookies or cake pops. More advanced? Go for a tiered cake!

No matter what you bake up, I’m sure you’ll have a blast together in the kitchen and probably some laughs along the way.

Ad lib a movie with subtitles

This is so much fun! Find a random movie with subtitles. You each pick a character or characters to play and you make up the dialogue! Pop some popcorn (it’s still a movie night) and pour yourself an adult beverage for this one!

Have a game night

There are several board games that can be played with only two players. Plus, there’s always good old card games. We love having game nights with our friends, but sometimes it’s fun for just the two of us. Find some snacks and get playing!

Go to an arcade

We’re definitely kids at heart and spend many date nights going to arcades. If you really enjoy playing games or winning prizes, this one can add up quick. So, I recommend only bringing a set amount of money so you don’t overspend.

At home spa night

What’s more romantic than a spa date? Create some spa time in the comforts of your own home and save some money, too! Light some nice candles, give each other massages and try face masks or foot soaks.

Trivia night

Many local bars and restaurants offer a trivia night. Test your trivia knowledge and get to know each other better for this fun night out. To save money, eat dinner at home before you go and limit your bill to a drink each.

Local winery tour

We love going to our local wineries to try new wines. Many tours are free and you can do a tasting at the end for $10 or less. If the winery allows, bring your own snacks, like cheese and crackers, veggies and hummus or fruit and chocolate.

Go mini golfing

You don’t need to be athletic or be good at golf to enjoy mini golf. This is great for relationships at any level because there’s lots of room for flirting. If you’re extra competitive, make a bet that the loser cooks dinner!

Take a drive and watch the sunset

Is there a great lookout spot by you to check out the sunset? We can usually catch a great sunset driving to the bay, about an hour away. We also stop at our favorite ice cream shop on the way and split a sundae!

Homemade pizza and comedy night

There are lots of different options for homemade pizza. You can usually find dough at the grocery store or opt for a premade crust. Then have fun layering on your favorite toppings. Pair it with a comedy special on Netflix or just search on Youtube for your favorite comedians.

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy your significant other’s company. Save your money for bigger adventures, like planning your next trip, buying a home or doing house renovations!

The idea is to spend time together and focus on the experience. Whether you go out or stay in, dating should be fun and enjoyable for both of you.

If you just started dating, date night should be about getting to know each other better. By trying different ideas, you can see what you enjoy doing together and learn each other’s strengths.

If you’re married or in a long-term relationship, dating is still so important! Date night should be about reconnecting, rekindling intimacy and remembering all the reasons you fell in love.
